How to Stay Focused When You Shop Online
Shopping online can be addictive. You can start by just browsing along online shops and before you know it, you would have bought more than you need and maxed out your credit card. Even after you have sworn you will just look, you end up buying. There are basically three reasons why our willpower wanes while we shop online:
1.Because you use a credit card
There are studies that have shown that people tend to spend more when they are using their credit cards. This is because we tend to overlook the fact that even though our cash may still be intact, we are still spending money.
2.The web is full of ads targeted at impulse shoppers
Impulse shopping is usually triggered when we see those ads in our favorite online magazine or favorite website enticing you to buy those newly released gadgets on sale, those heels that are just the rage or those perfumes that will make you smell like a Hollywood star. These ads have now included those that are used in 'keyword advertising'. These ads seduce you into making unplanned shopping online.
3.'Time-sensitive deals' or 'Limited offer' ads are too tempting to pass up
There are always offers that entice you to buy when you are browsing the online shops. These may be in the form of 'free shipping' or '50% off' deals that are time bound (they say offer valid till this date or that). These deals make it difficult for someone to pass up the chance and buy instantly.
So how do we avoid overspending and stay focused while shopping online? Well, we need to follow a simple rule. We need to follow the '24-Hour Rule.' Avoid making the purchase for 24 hours. If you can find the willpower to do this, then you can take the time to decide if the item is something you really need, just something you want, or something you already have.
After this rule, we need to do use three things while we shop online.
First, you need a budget. Make a budget for yourself before you even turn the computer on. And once a budget has been made, limit yourself to this budget strictly.
Second, have a buddy or a friend sit next to you to while you shop online. Ask that person to drag you away from your computer before you go overboard with the shopping.
Third, you need a stopwatch. Set yourself a limited amount of time for online shopping. Keep it to an hour, never longer. This is because online shopping means you see more merchandise in a small amount of time than going to an actual store.
If you are still having problems controlling your online shopping spending, then stop online shopping altogether. Online shopping lets you buy from a wide variety of stores conveniently and right from the comforts of your own home. For as long as you stay focused and disciplined, you can get great deals and find some items that you may not normally find in actual stores.
